Unwanted facial hair, also known as facial hirsutism, refers to excessive hair growth on areas such as the chin, upper lip, cheeks, or jawline. It is more common in women and can vary in thickness and colour. While often harmless, it can cause embarrassment or affect self-confidence, especially if the growth is sudden or noticeable.

The condition occurs when there is an imbalance of hormones, particularly an increase in androgens (male hormones) or heightened sensitivity of hair follicles to these hormones. Common causes include genetics, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), certain medications, or hormonal changes such as menopause. In some cases, the cause may be unknown, and hair growth is simply hereditary.

Unwanted facial hair can also be influenced by lifestyle and health factors. Being overweight, for instance, can affect hormone levels and increase androgen activity. Stress and irregular sleep may also contribute to hormonal imbalance, indirectly influencing hair growth patterns.
