Avodart (dutasteride) 0.5mg Capsules are a prescription-only medicine used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—enlarged prostate—in adult men. The medication improves urinary flow, reduces the risk of acute urinary retention, and decreases the need for prostate surgery. It is also used off-label in some cases to treat male pattern baldness, due to its strong DHT-suppressing action. Dutasteride is a long-acting treatment that is effective at reducing the hormone responsible for prostate growth and hair loss.

How It Works

Dutasteride, the active compound in Avodart, is a dual 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It blocks both Type I and Type II forms of the enzyme that convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Elevated DHT levels contribute to both prostate enlargement and hair follicle miniaturisation. By lowering DHT in the bloodstream and tissues, Avodart helps shrink the prostate and may allow some hair regrowth or prevention of further thinning.

Its long half-life (up to 5 weeks) means dutasteride remains in your system and continues to work even if a dose is missed. Maximum results for prostate relief or hair stabilisation are usually achieved after 3 to 6 months of consistent use.
