About this Condition Thrush

Thrush is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast that normally lives harmlessly in the body. It can affect various areas, most often the mouth (oral thrush) or the genital area. Thrush is not usually serious but can cause discomfort and irritation. It is more common in people with weakened immune systems, those taking antibiotics, or individuals exposed to certain hormonal or lifestyle factors.

Oral thrush appears as white, creamy patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, or roof of the mouth. These patches can be wiped away but may leave red, sore areas underneath. It can cause a cotton-like feeling in the mouth, loss of taste, or discomfort when eating or swallowing. Infants, denture wearers, and people using inhalers are particularly prone to developing oral thrush.

Genital thrush affects both men and women but is more common in women. Symptoms include itching, redness, and a thick, white discharge for women, or irritation and soreness on the penis for men. It often occurs when the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the body is disrupted, allowing Candida to multiply. This can happen after antibiotic use, hormonal changes, or wearing tight, non-breathable clothing.
